In August 2024, BMW announced a global stop-sale affecting a substantial portion of its vehicle lineup due to a defect in the Integrated Brake System (IBS). This issue could potentially impact hundreds of thousands of cars worldwide, including at BMW of Sherman Oaks, with a significant number of undelivered vehicles. Reports indicate that around 30,000 cars are currently awaiting delivery in Australia alone, and BMW has confirmed that approximately 175,000 vehicles are affected in Germany.
The voluntary recall targets around 278,000 models, including the 2023-2025 5 Series, i5, 7 Series, i7, X1, X2, X5, X6, X7, and XM. The problem lies within the brake module, which may not operate correctly. North Hollywood and Porter Ranch drivers will see a warning message on the main screen if an issue occurs, prompting the braking system to default to a safer mode. This could require firmer pressure on the brake pedal, leading to longer stopping distances due to reduced power assist.
This announcement expands on a previous recall of 76,000 vehicles made in February 2024, where it was found that replacement parts also need to be replaced. BMW urges owners in the Tarzana and Sherman Oaks/Los Angeles area to check if their vehicles are affected by visiting bmwusa.com/recalls or NHTSA.gov and entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Registration at bmwusa.com/MyBMW ensures owners receive timely updates regarding necessary repairs, which will be conducted at no cost.
