BMW Service and Diagnostics.jpg?Have you been enjoying testing your turbocharged BMW car or SUV to its limits? Remember, while they are incredibly fun to drive, you shouldn’t push them too hard without the proper BMW service. If you’ve ever wondered how maintenance varies for turbocharged engines, BMW of Sherman Oaks is about to set the record straight.

What Type of Engine Service Does a Turbocharged Engine Need?

Turbocharged engines need the same type of maintenance as naturally aspirated engines. These items include oil changes, spark plug replacements, and other essentials.

How Do Their Maintenance Needs Differ?

While the kinds of maintenance are essentially the same (aside from periodically inspecting and adjusting a turbocharger), the timing is different. Since the moving parts of a turbocharged engine move so much faster, they also wear more quickly, requiring some maintenance (particularly oil changes) more frequently.

How Often Do They Need Service?

We recommend synthetic oil for all BMW vehicles, but it’s particularly important for cars with turbo engines. Typically, you can go up to 15,000 miles between synthetic oil changes. However, as a general rule of thumb, turbocharged engines require an oil change every 5,000 miles.

Remember, your service needs will also depend on how much you utilize that turbo power. If you’re excessively flooring it, your engine may need service more frequently, and the parts can become damaged. On the flip side, that typically leads to a lot of slamming on the brakes, which means you’ll need brake maintenance more often too.
