You may have heard of the BMW xDrive® and know it’s the manufacturer’s version of all-wheel-drive drivetrains. This drivetrain is available in several new BMW models, including the popular BMW X5. Learn more about BMW xDrive® and what makes it different from traditional all-wheel-drive systems.

What Is BMW xDrive®?

BMW xDrive® is designed to maximize traction, especially under wet and uneven roads or when making sharp turns. The system is always in play but is only activated when needed. This makes it helpful in driving under rainy or muddy conditions, or farther from the beaten path.

How Does BMW xDrive® Work?

The system monitors the wheel speed and can send all 100% of engine power to a single wheel if needed for maximum traction. Under normal driving conditions, the system distributes torque and horsepower more evenly, about 45% to the front axles and 55% to the rear axles.

What Are the System’s Advantages?

Making Turns Easier

The traction control also comes into play during turns and cornering. The system lowers power to the inner wheels when going through a tight curve.

This assists in the sideway movement of the vehicle, which helps the driver more quickly exit the turn. This also minimizes the risk of oversteering, which happens when driving through a curve at high speed.

Better Fuel Economy

Many AWD vehicles suffer from lower fuel economy due to the drivetrain adding more weight and requiring additional energy expenditure. The BMW xDrive® system, however, maximizes fuel efficiency by only sending power precisely where it’s needed, eliminating waste typically caused by lesser all-wheel drive systems.
